William Gordon "Rip" Long, 91, of Garrard County, passed away after a short illness on Tuesday August 15, 2023, at The Landmark of Lancaster in Lancaster, KY.
Gordon was born on November 2, 1931, in Lancaster, KY to the late William “Willie” and Stella East Long. He graduated from Buckeye High School where he played basketball and developed his artistic skill as an oil painter.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Gordon worked for Cowden Manufacturing for several years and retired from Trane Company in Lexington, KY, after 29 years. He loved fishing and gardening in his free time.
Gordon was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and attended Forks of Dix River Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Gordon Wayne Long (Angela) of Lancaster, Kentucky; Gary Eugene Long (Nancy) of Lancaster, Kentucky; a daughter, Sherri Smith (Steve) of Frankfort, Kentucky; nine grandchildren, Charisse Epley, Marie Morgan, Chastity Scott, Dawn Scott, Brandon Long, Nathan Long, Brooke Long Rader, Malory Smith, and Peyton Smith Perkins, along with 18 great grandchildren.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Hazel Howard Long.
Visitation will be 1:00-3:00 PM Friday, August 18, 2023, at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Friday, August 18, 2023, at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Browning officiating.
Burial at Lancaster Cemetery will follow the service.
Pallbearers are Nathan Long, Brandon Long, Dustin Rader, Michael Fayne, Pat Alcorn, Mark Perkins, and Tommy Robb.
Honorary pallbearers are Ramona Fayne, Jack Fayne, Pearline Bicknell, Danny Waters, Johnny Rhodus, Joe Purcell, Bobby Hardwick, Marvin Thomas, and Wayne Prewitt.
