Ward F. Herring Obituary

Ward F. Herring, 70, of Richmond, Kentucky went home to be with the Lord on July 13, 2025, from injuries sustained from a motorcycle accident on July 3rd.

Ward was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  He was the son of the late Elwood E. Herring, Sr. and Vera Ward Herring.  Ward was preceded in death by his brothers, Elwood E. Herring, Jr., and Ernest Thomas Herring.

Ward served in the United States Army in Fort Rucker, Alabama as an aircraft subsystem mechanic. He received badges for sharpshooter (rifle) and marksman (grenade). He also received the Good Conduct Medal. After his time in the Army, Ward attended Tomlinson College in Cleveland, Tennessee where he met his wife, Judie. Ward enthusiastically served in the United States Postal Service at Wilmington, NC and Lexington, KY for 34+ years.  He continually sought additional learning opportunities to improve his service and graduated from Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC with a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology.

Ward accepted Jesus as his Savior when he was a young boy. He was a student of the Word and learned more about serving Jesus each day. In Ward’s earlier years, he enjoyed singing and playing his trumpet in church.  Most recently, his passion of helping others included serving the homeless, disabled veterans, and those families of deceased veterans. Over the years Ward was an active member of Rolling Thunder, the American Legion where he served as Second Vice-Commander, the DAV where he served as Commander, the Salvation Army, and Celebrate Recovery where he served as a teacher/leader. Any passion Ward found to do, he did it “whole heartedly as to the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). He enjoyed his family times of fishing, hunting, camping, singing, playing games, and took great delight in each of his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Judith Griffin Herring of Richmond, daughter Karista Richardson (Randy) of Georgetown, KY, Joseph Ward Herring (Tiffany) of Lexington, Heidi Marie (Reid) Winn of Guthrie, KY, and Daniel Thomas Herring of Richmond; grandchildren Hallie Anna, Scarlet, Westin, Oliver, and Lainey Rose; sister Sherry Shroyer (Dennis) of Cleveland, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews; Ward’s mother-in-law Anna Griffin and brother-in-law, Johnny Griffin of Waynesburg, sisters-in-law Deborah (Greg) Hamm, and Kathleen (Brock) Dickerson of New Richmond.

A Remembrance of Life service will be held 12pm Friday, July 18, 2025 at Spurlin Funeral Home of Lancaster with Pastor Rob Muncy of Gano Baptist Church officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00am-12:00pm. Interment will follow at 1:30pm at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Shroyer, John Griffin, Reid Winn, Hillard Foster, Jr., Tim Goins, Randy Richardson, Commander Chuck Mitchell and Brock Dickerson.

Memorial gifts may be made to Rolling Thunder ®, Inc. Kentucky Chapter 5 at https://donorbox.org/rolling-thunder-ky-chapter-5-donation.
