Gwendolyn Newcomb Obituary

The lovely Gwendolyn Joyce Hocker was born to Joseph P. and Elizabeth Hocker on November 17, 1952.  Our beloved became Gwendolyn Joyce Newcomb, a devoted wife, on May 13, 1978 after marrying Jimmy Newcomb.

Not only was Gwendolyn devoted to her husband, she was dedicated to her family, friends and job.  In 1974, immediately after graduating from Garrard County High School, Gwendolyn became an employee of Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) where she remained an asset for 47 years until she reluctantly retired in December 2020.  For a number of years our beloved was a sought after aerobics instructor who gave people a true sense of well being and accomplishment.  Gwendolyn also served on the board of HH.

Gwendolyn was a devout member of St. Paul Predestinarian Baptist Church of Lancaster, Kentucky.  She served as the Church and Sunday School secretary, a dining room specialist, and at times, a one-woman choir, with a voice so strong and vibrant, she could melt your heart with a hum.  We know that the "Morning Stars" have reclaimed their missing voice.

Our beloved was not only a devoted wife, dedicated employee, and devout member, she was a loving, caring, compassionate daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.  Being in Gwendolyn's presence was like laying seaside basking in the warm sun with a cool breeze rolling in over you off the water. She was like the scent of fresh baked cookies, warm and inviting.  Gwendolyn never met a stranger.  Knowing her was loving her, and she is a star that will be truly and dearly missed.

As an elect, on October 7, 2023, Gwen was called home to her former glory.  She was preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth and Joseph Hocker Sr.; siblings Etta Mae Hocker, Mary C. Mucker, Elizabeth R. Warren, Joseph P. Hocker, Allan Hocker Sr; nieces Diana M. Boulder, Joyce A. Hocker; nephews Allan Hocker Jr. and Aundre Holloway.

She leaves to mourn, husband Jimmy L. Newcomb; brother William (Donna) Hocker; sisters, Betty M. Wilkinson, Georgetta (GiGi) Hocker; sister-in-law Carolyn Newcomb of Danville; brother-in-law James F. Warren of Lancaster; special nephew Lomont Hocker of Lancaster; a host of special nieces and nephews; special friend Kenny Mac Smith of Stanford; and a host of many friends.
