Barry Wayne Peel, 80, of Lancaster, passed away Friday, October 31, 2025 at Stanford Crossing in Stanford, KY. He was born in Ohio but was a life-long resident of his beloved state of Kentucky. Barry had a long career in broadcasting. His on-air personality began in radio where his talent led him to television. He retired in 2010. He was a recognizable and inspiring news commentator, educator, historian, and political correspondent. His work with Channel 27 WKYT and Channel 36 WTVQ spanned more than thirty years where he was admired and respected throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky. Barry maintained a lifetime interest in history,
politics and government policy and he was a frequent guest in the early years of “Comment on Kentucky” that aired on the Kentucky Educational Television Network. He moderated numerous debates for elections for Congress and the Kentucky General Assembly.
Barry graduated high school at Lancaster High School, Class of 1964, Lancaster, KY and has maintained a lifetime of friends from his school and community. He obtained a Master’s Degree in History from Eastern Kentucky University. Barry was an avid baseball fan and loved the Cincinnati Reds. He was known to be on the phone with his friends to provide commentary during games so they didn’t miss a play.
He was predeceased by a host of relatives, neighbors, friends, and, his dear Mother, Mary Lee Brooks. Barry’s presence will be missed by many friends, cousins, and those in public service.
Funeral services will be 1pm Friday, November 7, 2025 at Spurlin Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11am until service time. A private family burial will be held in Lancaster Cemetery.
